What lives in the open water shadows? Imagine a world so mysterious in which you are weightless, yet it holds your entire body with an effortless force. A place where darkness becomes light and opens to you the freedom to explore the depths of the minutiae of your being or wander freely and mindlessly through nothingness.

It is a place of torture, of a tyrannical power, and sublime beckoning peace. Its health benefits are vast, known and unknown, but death might lie a split second away.

This is a world that shares its boundless energy with you regardless of who you are or what you look like or believe. Certainty lies in each different experience. It washes away anything you’re willing to let go of, providing a path to discovery and growth.

This world is open water swimming.

About two years ago, I concluded open water swimming is my art and a greater purpose.  Art is a portal in which beauty pours out. The transcendence of open water reminds me of a connection to something beyond my comprehension. Its nature and my pursuit and practice come to represent a microcosm of life and beyond.

Time in the water is a brief respite untethered to worldly responsibilities providing gifts of present tense being, for being’s sake. My friends and I talk about these gifts all the time. The day is here to share and pass them on to you.

The purpose of these writings (and future podcasts) is to give public wings to the examinations and the personal experiments resulting from my aquatic curiosity and connection. My goal is to open a thorough conversation with you by expressing my questions, what I learn from teasing them out, and learning new perspectives from you.

It’s time to put it all out there.

I ask you to share your experiences, thoughts and curiosities in whatever your chosen pursuit is. We can do so unedited, with humor and satire, imperfectly without judgement, and authentically in a community whose price of admission is possibly a drop of courage to step through unfamiliar discomfort, for unknown rewards. Please join me.

I encourage you to comment below.

Let’s begin.
